Founded in 1961, Yves Saint Laurent was the first couture house to introduce the concept of luxury prêt-à-porter, in a 1966 collection called ‘rive gauche’. This was synonymous with youth and freedom; a shift that represented a critical step in the modernisation of fashion and revolutionised the socio-cultural landscape. Fast forward to 2015 and Hedi Slimane took the reigns, imbuing the brand with the same modern spirit as Yves had scandalised society with back in its formative years. Inspired by rock ’n’ roll, Slimane’s footwear was the calling card of cool young things everywhere - lived-in ankle boots, glittery pumps and a strong desire to create a retro redux. As of 2016 designer Anthony Vacarello took the helm at the storied fashion house and debuted his first collection for SS17.
